Access to Safe and Clean Water

Dove Love Charity Organization · March 2026

When the Lake Is the Only Option

Across the island communities, Lake Victoria stretches endlessly in every direction. To outsiders, it looks like abundance. But for the families and children who live here, the water that surrounds them is not safe to drink.

With almost no access to boreholes or clean water infrastructure, communities are left with one option: drawing directly from the lake. Children wade in to collect water in jerry cans. Families cook, clean, and drink from the same contaminated source.

The consequences are severe and ongoing. Waterborne diseases are a constant threat to life on the island, particularly for the youngest and most vulnerable.

Cholera Typhoid Dysentery Bilharzia

These are not rare occurrences they are recurring realities that affect children, parents, and the elderly throughout the year. When a child falls ill with a waterborne disease, the cost of treatment is often beyond what island families can afford. Many simply go without care.

Government authorities have historically assumed that proximity to the lake means water access is adequate. It is not. Availability and safety are two very different things. No child should have to choose between thirst and disease.

Dove Love Charity Organization is committed to establishing a safe and reliable water source for the children in our care and the surrounding community. This means drilling a borehole or installing a purification system that will serve dozens of families for years to come.

"Every day without clean water is another day children are at risk. This cannot wait."
